Starting your micro locs journey is an exciting and empowering decision. It takes courage and commitment to embark on this natural hair journey, but the rewards are well worth it. With micro locs, you are embracing your natural hair texture and allowing it to flourish in its own unique way.
As you begin your journey, it's important to remember that every head of hair is different. Your hair may not look exactly like someone else's, and that's perfectly okay. Embrace your hair's individuality and trust the process. Here are a few key tips to ensure you have a smooth journey...
Wash your hair: Start by braiding and banding your locs (8-10 sections). Shampooing your microlocs with a clarifying shampoo. Gently massage your scalp to cleanse it and avoid rough movements that can unravel the braids. Rinse thoroughly.
Conditioning: Do Not Condition New Locs. Conditions new loss will cause the hair to soften and unravel
Towel dry: Gently pat your hair dry with a microfiber towel or an old cotton t-shirt to remove excess water. Avoid rubbing your hair vigorously with the towel as it can cause frizz and damage the locs. You can air dry the rest or plait and let dry.
Moisturizing: Lightweight products only. Use a spray bottle of water to moisturize or rosewater for a little more hydration. Apply a water-based moisturizer or a leave-in conditioner to keep your microlocs hydrated. Be cautious not to apply too much product to avoid buildup and potential mold growth. Use your fingers or a tiny spray bottle to distribute the moisturizer evenly.
Oil: Lightweight oils only. Use oils like jojoba oil or grape-seed oil for dryness. Avoid heavy oils as this may cause a build up.
Avoid excessive manipulation: Try to minimize touching or playing with your microlocs as it can cause them to unravel, weaken or excess frizz. Refrain from re-twisting your locs if your on a retightening schedule. Don’t retighten too often, as this can also lead to breakage.
Protect your locs at night: Sleep with a satin or silk scarf or use a satin pillowcase to protect your microlocs. These materials reduce friction, prevents frizz, breakage and lint build up.
Avoid heavy products: Stay away from heavy oils, butter-based products, or excessive waxes, as they can cause buildup and make your locs feel heavy or greasy over time. Opt for lightweight, water-based products instead.
Regular maintenance: Schedule regular visits to maintain your locs. Your loctitian will discuss your retightening schedule to ensure the health of your locs. Self maintenance is also a very efficient in maintaining your own locs. Talk with your loctitian to discuss your options.
