Microlocs Care Guide: Tips for a Healthy Loc Journey

Starting your microlocs journey is one of the most exciting, empowering decisions you can make for your hair — and your confidence. It takes courage and commitment to go natural, but the rewards? Absolutely worth it. At Heal Thy Hair, we want every step of your journey to be intentional, informed, and stress-free.

One thing to keep in mind: every head of hair is different. Your locs won't look exactly like the ones you see online, and that's the beauty of it. Embrace your hair's individuality and trust the process. Here are the key care tips to keep your microlocs thriving from day one.

🧴 Washing Your Microlocs

Before washing, braid and band your locs into 8–10 sections to keep them secure. Use a clarifying shampoo and gently massage your scalp — avoid rough movements that can cause your locs to unravel. Rinse thoroughly and repeat if needed.

đźš« Skip the Conditioner (Yes, Really)

Do not condition new locs. Conditioner softens the hair shaft, which will cause fresh locs to unravel before they've had a chance to set. Hold off until your loctician gives you the green light.

🧣 Towel Drying

Gently pat your hair dry with a microfiber towel or an old cotton t-shirt to absorb excess water. Avoid rubbing — this creates frizz and can weaken your locs. Air dry the rest of the way, or plait and let them dry naturally.

đź’§ Moisturizing

Lightweight products only. A simple spray bottle of water is your best friend for daily moisture. For a little extra hydration, try rosewater. If you use a leave-in or water-based moisturizer, apply sparingly — too much product leads to buildup, and buildup leads to mold. Use your fingers or a small spray bottle to distribute evenly.

đź«’ Oils

Stick to lightweight oils like jojoba or grapeseed oil to combat dryness. Avoid heavy oils and butters — they sit on top of the loc and cause buildup over time.

🙅🏾‍♀️ Avoid Excessive Manipulation

Keep your hands out of your hair as much as possible. Constantly touching or twisting your locs can cause unraveling, frizz, and weakening of the loc base. If you're on a retightening schedule with your loctician, do not re-twist at home between appointments — over-manipulation is one of the leading causes of breakage.

🌙 Protect Your Locs at Night

Sleep with a satin or silk scarf, or use a satin pillowcase. These materials reduce friction, prevent frizz, minimize breakage, and keep lint from embedding in your locs.

🧪 Avoid Heavy Products

Stay away from heavy oils, butter-based products, and waxes. These cause buildup that weighs down your locs and can be difficult to remove. When in doubt, go lighter — always choose water-based products.

đź“… Regular Maintenance

Consistent appointments are key to healthy locs. Your loctician will set a retightening schedule based on your hair's growth pattern and needs. Self-maintenance is also a great option — ask your loctician about learning to care for your own locs between visits. (Psst — we have a digital guide for that! 👀)

⏳ Be Patient

Microlocs are a journey, not a destination. There will be stages — some cute, some not so cute — and that's completely normal. Stay consistent with your care routine, show up to your maintenance appointments, and trust that your locs are doing exactly what they're supposed to do.
